How To Reduce Pain In Childbirth

A former Master of a leading Irish Maternity Hospital wrote to his colleagues as follows: “The recording is good, the idea is good. It sets the pace, which we would do well to take seriously. Get it, and think about the implications of the relation to our own work, and the conditions in which our patients have their babies”. This recording shows how to use the techniques of deep relaxation to achieve a pain free and pleasurable childbirth (Hypnobirth).

Deep relaxation has already been used widely and successfully as a means of eliminating pain. Indeed, attending classes in relaxation is a good idea during pregnancy. Apart from learning to relax, there are the additional advantages of meeting people and doing the exercises themselves. Naturally, it is also essential to attend your regular check ups. Regular practice in relaxation in the home can be extremely beneficial, whether you are already attending classes or are unable to do so. If relaxation is practised at the beginning of the pregnancy, it is possible to control morning sickness, learn to remain undisturbed by the baby’s movement and cope with the attendant problem of pregnancy.

By the time the baby is due to be born, practice in deep relaxation can make the experience of giving birth a pleasurable one. There is no guarantee that the deep relaxation will make childbirth completely painless if it is practised only immediately before the event. But with experience in the use of this technique it is always possible to reduce the pain. Deep Relaxation is probably the best way of reversing an earlier message and allowing positive thoughts to sink deeply into the mind.
