Nocturnal enuresis or “bed wetting” is a universal problem with children and, to a lesser extent, young adults. Sufferers of this complaint share two characteristics: in most cases medical tests show them to be normal physically, and almost everyone suffering from this problem sleeps heavily. Treatment has proved difficult. It has aimed chiefly to reduce the depth of sleep by using therapeutic drugs, to relax the patient through the use of tranquillisers.

Also, the apparatus for waking a child if his/her bed is wet is available. These methods have had only limited success, and this problem is regarded as a particularly difficult one to treat. A child wets his/her bed if tense: every action in a tensed person is quick or exaggerated, and the action of the bladder is no exception. It empties before it is full. It is at a subconscious level that human emotions and certain mechanisms (the heart, for example) are regulated. The mind at the subconscious level is responsible for keeping the person awake or allowing them to go to sleep, according to the importance of the stimuli it receives.

Once a child learns to relax, he will be able to go to bed with less on his/her mind. To help them to do this it is very important that any tensions in the home or school are identified and remedied. His/her bladder will expand normally. When it is completely filled, the sensation will awaken them. The process can be compared to the experience of a country dweller arriving to stay in the city. It will take them some time to adjust to the sounds of traffic and so on. Once he adjusts, the subconscious mechanisms of the mind will allow them to sleep through an unprecedented level of noise.

Some children who listen to this recording can be dry from the first night; with others and young adults it takes longer for the natural reflex to be regained. It is desirable that the parents listen to the recording with their child at least once and explain anything he/she does not understand. Deep Relaxation is probably the best way of reversing an earlier message and allowing positive thoughts to sink deeply into the mind.

CAVEAT 2

Each recording should be played when you are sitting comfortably, somewhere free from any chance of disturbance. If you fall asleep while it is playing, you should start again, preferably sitting up. We recommend that you practise Deep Relaxation once or twice each day until you achieve a feeling of release. The recording should then be put aside for future use as a ‘booster’ if and when required.
