Jack Gibson, a retired surgeon, used the techniques of deep relaxation extensively in hospital – including several thousand surgical procedures. Migraine is a worldwide problem, affecting all type of people. It is also an extremely painful condition. Its mechanism is as follows: blood vessels receive messages through the nervous system which cause them to go into spasms and then dilate, causing enormous pain. The nervous system operates at two levels – conscious and subconscious. Such vital mechanisms as the heart are governed at a subconscious level. At this level, the involuntary part of the nervous system containing the automatic nerves functions. It is generally believed that the automatic nervous system is outside our conscious control – but we do have a certain degree of access to it. When in a state of deep relaxation, it is possible to have access to our subconscious. In this state, it is possible to control the dilation of blood vessels. By bringing conscious reason into the deeper subconscious feelings, one can cause positive messages to be sent to the blood vessels, and maintain the normal level of tone. It is when feelings are out of line with reason that tension and as a consequence, migraine, develops. Deep Relaxation is probably the best way of reversing an earlier message and allowing positive thoughts to sink deeply into the mind.

CAVEAT 2

Each recording should be played when you are sitting comfortably, somewhere free from any chance of disturbance. If you fall asleep while it is playing, you should start again, preferably sitting up. We recommend that you practise Deep Relaxation once or twice each day until you achieve a feeling of release. The recording should then be put aside for future use as a ‘booster’ if and when required.
